The burgeoning adventure bike category is one expected to draw plenty of interest and enquiry at the 2011 Sydney Motorcycle & Scooter Show, 25-27 November at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
At home on the trails or the open road, adventure bikes are designed for travel.
Larger fuel tanks mean they can go further for longer, and comfort isn’t compromised thanks to longer suspension which absorbs impact on uneven surfaces.
Plentiful storage makes the destination dependent only on imagination, with a range of side panniers, tank bags and top boxes available.
A fast-growing factory and after-market accessories range allows the rider to select from countless customisation options, from luxury items to extra bike protection.
Next week’s event will showcase a variety of adventure bike offerings from major manufacturers.
BMW is widely touted as encouraging the category’s growth with its original R 80 GS, built over 3 decades ago.
“BMW created the adventure bike market over 30 years ago with the revolutionary R 80 GS and the GS range remains a integral part of the BMW Motorcycle line up,” said Miles Davis, Marketing Manager Motorrad, BMW Group Australia.
“It’s almost like the GS was created for Australian conditions and that’s one of the main reasons for such a strong growth within its class.”
The continuing success of Triumph’s Tiger 800 and Tiger 800 XC is further proof of the category’s growth.
“While there was some anticipation for Triumph’s new adventure duo to impact competitor sales it seems Triumph’s entry into the segment has also further increased the segment’s national sales figures,” said Darren Kersey, Marketing Co-ordinator, PS Importers.
“Triumph has just recently also launched its new Tiger 1200 Explorer and there are positive signs already that the larger capacity tourer is likely to be another huge hit.”
Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Ducati are just some of the other brands offering an adventure bike option to enthusiasts, with a full line-up of new models ready for show in Sydney.
Visitors can also check out exhibitors offering the full adventure experience, such as Aussie-based motorcycle touring company Compass Expeditions.
Its Patagonia Explorer tour was recently named in National Geographic’s ‘Top 50 tours of a lifetime’, and was the only motorcycle tour company in the world to make the list.
As well as leading tours at home, it offers touring options through South America, South Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkey and Cambodia, and its customer-oriented focus has made it a favourite with riders of all ages and experience levels.

Colour and culture of motorcycles brings Sydney CBD to life

A 25% increase in visitors and many reports of record show sales from exhibitors have highlighted an immensely successful return to Darling Harbour for the Sydney Motorcycle & Scooter Show.
Close to 26,000 visitors made their way to Sydney’s CBD last Friday through Sunday, experiencing all the colour and culture of the two wheel world through the impressive displays of over 130 exhibitors.
